Listen to an interesting talk by renowned author and journalist Liz Hodgkinson, about her latest book ‘A MINK COAT IN ST NEOTS’.
This is a story of intrigue a true detective story, but without the murder. Who was this mysterious woman who lived in a nearby village and regularly visited Liz’s mother’s flower shop. Where did she come from, was she a wealthy Russian princess, wearing her mink coat as she walked along the streets of St Neots.
The book isn’t just a story about this elegant lady but gives us a brief glimpse into the life of the inhabitants of a provincial town in the 1950s and 60s. This was a turbulent period, the country was still impacted by the effects of the Second World War, families had been relocated out of the destruction of the blitz in London to towns such as Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage and St Neots. Provincial cultures were being intermingled with the raw city life of the evacuees from London. In the middle of this turmoil and changing culture a strange woman, visiting a simple florists shop, captured the imagination of a young girl and her mother.
After the talk stay and meet some of the members of the Society, learn all about our scheme to help promote the preservation and recording of life within Huntingdonshire.
